I picked this up as part of a local book club. Not sure I would have stumbled upon it otherwise, and I'm glad that I did. This was something slightly outside my comfort zone, but it was such a fun read.

The cover lists this as a dark romance, which had me feeling slightly apprehensive. I consider myself a bit squeamish, but the trigger warnings at the front of the book set me at ease. And while this book certainly had its share of dark romance tropes, the overall story was more along the lines of urban fantasy or contemporary fantasy.

This was a comparatively short read, but it sure packed a lot of story! Without getting too deep into spoiler territory, I thought I knew what the main struggle of the book was going to be, but that issue was solved about halfway through. I was confused about what they were going to spend the rest of the book doing, but the plot just got delightfully weirder the longer it went on. The supernatural lore that emerged was a fascinating blend of several different myths, legends, and pantheons.

I have to say the characters really steal the show. Even the supporting cast felt well-rounded and had their own distinctive foibles. This was a dual POV book, and the two protagonists' personalities even found their way into the narrative text, which I thought was a nice touch. I think Grandma needs a book of her own!

The author takes a few creative liberties with dialogue tags, but in general the writing was strong and entertaining. If you enjoy dark romance OR urban fantasy stories, you should check this book out. If you like both, this series might be one of your new favorites.
